Public Event: Youth Policies in the Arab Mediterranean region
On the 18th of May 2016, the American University in Cairo (AUC), jointly with the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs (CIDOB), organised a Public Event focused on youth policies in the Arab Mediterranean countries.
The meeting gathered policy-makers and other stakeholders in the region working on youth issues. Ms. Anissa Hassouna (Vice Chair of the Egyptian Council of Foreign Affairs) and Dr. Gouda Abdel-Khalek (AUC Forum) recalled the importance of youth education and their future in the region.
A first roundtable moderated by Dr. Kamel Boucherf (CREAD), featured stakeholders on youth working in the field of education, employment and social exclusion. It was pointed out that professors should encourage students to be more critical, something that should not be seen as a lack of respect. All participants highlighted the need to devote more attention and invest more on the region's youth, for they will shape the future.
In a second roundtable on “International Cooperation in the field of youth”, moderated by Dr. Ozgehan Senyuva (METU), Three experts from the European Commission, the Union for Mediterranean and the Anna Lindh Foundation shared their experiences regarding the development and implementation of youth programs in the region. After a round of Q & A, the speakers concluded that current programs need to be fostered, insisting on the need for closer cooperation both with local institutions and between these institutions working on youth.
The meeting culminated with the screening of Khamsa, the SAHWA Documentary directed by Marc Almodovar. After its screening, a discussion about the selection process of the protagonists, the topics dealt with and other artistic issues followed.
